Hiking instead of sprinting: why i’m not chasing algorithms anymore

A winding forest trail surrounded by trees, representing a steady, long-term approach to marketing rather than chasing fast trends.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been watching something interesting unfold.

The same exact content — same message, same visuals, same intent — has performed very differently across platforms. Instagram reacts one way. TikTok reacts another. Facebook, as usual, plays by its own rules.

If you’ve ever felt like social media is constantly moving the goalposts, you’re not wrong.

And for a while, it’s tempting to ask:
Should I change my voice here?
Should I format this differently there?
Should I just do what the algorithm wants today?

That’s the sprint.

Same content. Different terrain.

My Make It Memorable Instagram and TikTok pages both started at zero.
Instagram launched first. TikTok came later. Both are still relatively new.

What I’ve learned quickly is this: Each platform has its own personality, audience behavior, and momentum.

  • TikTok tends to reward movement, presence, and simplicity.
  • Instagram can be more unpredictable — sometimes rewarding polish, sometimes rewarding motion, sometimes… nothing at all.

The lesson wasn’t to do more.
It was to observe more.

Instead of bending my brand to fit each platform, I started asking a different question:

How do I stay recognizable everywhere, even when the results differ?

Voice matters more than velocity

Here’s the thing that became clear — and this is important.

When you constantly adjust your voice to fit trends, formats, or algorithms, you may gain short-term reach… but you lose long-term familiarity.

And familiarity is what builds trust.

It may take longer to grow this way.
But it allows your brand to stay authentic across all areas:

  • Online
  • Offline
  • In person

That consistency carries weight.

A reminder from Apple (and why it clicked)

This idea really clicked for me after seeing a recent discussion about Apple’s approach to AI.

While many companies are sprinting to be first, loudest, or flashiest in the AI race, Apple isn’t chasing headlines. They’re focusing on what they already do well: devices, distribution, and experience.

Their perspective is simple:
AI will become a commodity — something integrated, not something that is the brand.

That’s a hiking mindset, not a sprinting one.

They’re not trying to win today’s race.
They’re building for endurance.

And honestly? That’s exactly how I now see social platforms.

Algorithms change. Recognition lasts.

For most small businesses, creators, and service providers, social media isn’t about virality.

It’s about reassurance.

People may find you through search, referrals, or word-of-mouth, but they often check your social presence to decide:

  • Do you feel real?
  • Do you sound consistent?
  • Do I trust this?

Social doesn’t have to be loud to be effective.
It just has to be clear.

The long game I’m choosing

I’m still testing. I’m still learning.
But I’m no longer sprinting after every signal.

Instead, I’m hiking:

  • Watching patterns
  • Staying recognizable
  • Letting each platform do what it does best, without losing myself in the process

Because clarity beats noise.
And consistency beats speed — every time.

If you need help switching from sprinting to hiking, let’s set up a chat.   No sales pitch, just an honest discussion to figure out next steps.  That’s the beauty of clarity.
